Preparing For Christmas

PREPARING FOR CHRISTMAS

Fall 2022

Prayers for the holidays

For many, we are approaching "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year." Christmas is a season of celebrations rooted in the birth of Our Savior, Jesus Christ.

There are signs everywhere to get us into the holiday spirit as early as August. From retail stores and special promotions by email and mail, every brand is competing for our attention. Everyone proclaims theirs is the top item of the year and we must buy it today to send loved ones the latest and greatest gift.

But here in our convent, things are not noisy or distracting. The Sisters have reached the stage of their lives where even at this time of year there is quiet. They can concentrate on Advent, which is the Church’s spiritual preparation for Christmas. Because we wait until December to decorate there are no major distractions. There is little planning and prepping for the holiday. For most Sisters in our convents their families are either far away or have already passed. So, this season can feel a bit empty without our prayers and Advent reflections.

As women who have devoted their lives to Christ and serve those in need, our Sisters cherish their memories of students and patients. They share warm recollections of close friends and often pray to thank God for a full life.

What keeps the Sisters most inspired during this time are the small acts of kindness so many of you perform: Christmas cards and blessings by mail; emails and cards with pictures of former students and friends sharing holidays with friends. Please continue to send us news of your loved ones, and share your intentions and pray with us during this beautiful time of year.

We all have so much to be grateful for, to cherish during these upcoming weeks, especially all that you have given us and continue to do for us.

Gratefully yours,

Sister M. William McGovern, FDC

P.S. Thank you for your steadfast support of all our endeavors throughout the years. Any gift you can make at this time is greatly appreciated by all of our Sisters.

Support the Sisters

Wishing You a Very Merry Christmas!

The Daughters of Divine Charity have a special devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

June 6, 2022

Join us in prayer on Friday, June 24, 2022 in recognition of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Feast Day.

In 1675, Jesus told St. Margaret Mary that He wanted the Feast of the Sacred Heart to be celebrated on the Friday after the Corpus Christi octave. In 1856, the Feast of the Sacred Heart became a universal feast.

St. John Paul II, a great devotee of the Sacred Heart, said, “This feast reminds us of the mystery of the love of God for the people of all times.”

Dear Friends of the Sisters,

Today we are reaching out to you with humbled hearts!

The response to our urgent appeal for a repair to the HVAC system in the Chapel of the convent at Francesca Residence in Akron, Ohio has been overwhelming. Although we have not reached our goal yet, we are confident that we will before the end of June. Fortunately, this means the work can begin before the next heat wave.

Our residents and our Sisters in Akron are extremely grateful to all that have made a donation towards this project.

If you have not been able to send a gift yet, please consider doing so today. Our online donation page is available here. If you prefer, you may mail a gift made out to the Daughters of Divine Charity to 850 Hylan Blvd., Staten Island, NY 10305.

Thank you again for your generosity. As a special thank you to our donors, the Sisters ask that you join us in prayer on Friday, June 24, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. in celebration of the Scared Heart of Jesus. This is a special day for the Congregation of the Daughters of Divine Charity.

Did you know our Sisters have a great devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus? When founding the congregation, Mother Franciska Lechner dedicated it to the solemnity of Jesus. The original face of their medal was the image of Jesus’s Sacred Heart. This image also appears through the artwork of the convents. And for each Sister, this depiction holds a special place in their hearts and hands, as it is the image on the rings the Sisters received when they professed their vows.

To all our friends and supporters, thank you for the blessing you have been to our Sisters. Praying for you and your loved ones, knowing you are praying with us and for us, gives us the strength to continue our ministry.

May the Holy Family continue to bless you!

Gratefully yours in Christ,
The Daughters of Divine Charity

Easter Message

April 12, 2022

                                                                                                             April 10, 2022

Dear Friends in Christ,

On behalf of the Sisters of St. Joseph Hill Convent and all the Daughters of Divine Charity I would like to take this opportunity to wish you, the Administration, Staff, Families, Alumnae, Associates and Friends of St. Joseph Hill Academy and of the Daughters of Divine Charity a very blessed Easter.  May this Easter Season be filled with many spiritual blessings as we sing the joyful Easter Alleluia and hold the promise of Jesus in our hearts that HE is always with us, protecting and guiding us in our life’s journey to eternal life.

May these Sacred Days of Holy Week draw us all closer to Jesus as we take time to reflect and pray and be with Jesus on His journey from Jerusalem to Calvary.

These days offer to everyone teachable moments in the life of our Savior that remind us of how much Jesus loves us.  Please spend some time in quiet prayer with your children drawing them closer to Jesus as we recall the suffering, death and resurrection of our Savior who through His unconditional LOVE wins for us the crown of victory and opens heaven for all.

May what you experience during these miraculous days of Holy Week help you to celebrate more fully the fifty days of Easter which then leads us to Pentecost and the promise of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

You are in our daily prayers entrusting all to our Blessed Mother, who experienced the suffering, agony and death of her beloved Son for LOVE of us.  During these challenging times may we look to Jesus, Mary and St. Joseph for strength and consolation.

The Sisters and I thank you for your love, support, generosity and prayers.   May all those who have died during this past year rest in eternal peace.  May the

blessings of the Lord guide, protect and be with all of you and your families not just for Easter but each and every day.

         Happy Easter Everyone!

“For the Lord is truly Risen as He has said.”
                            Love and Prayers,
                        Sister Mary Coffelt, F.D.C.
                                                and all the
                            Daughters of Divine Charity

For God so loved the world,
     that He gave
   His only begotten Son,
 that whoever believes in Him
should not perish,
 but have
Eternal life.
                                         John 3:16

Happy Feast of St. Joseph

March 21, 2022

Daughters of Divine Charity
Holy Family Province
Wishing Everyone
a Blessed and
Happy Feast of St. Joseph

“All Sisters have an unending trust in our holy Father Joseph.  Besides the Mother of our Lord he was confident and is also our greatest advocate and protector.  May this love and this trust never be diminished in the Sisters of the Congregation.”

(Chronicle, I., November 1, 1876)

Memorare to St. Joseph

Remember, O most chaste spouse of the Virgin Mary, that never was it
known that anyone who implored your help and sought your intercession was left
unaided.  Full of confidence in your power I come to you and beg your protection.
Despise not O Guardian of the Redeemer my petitions, but in your goodness, hear
and answer me.   Amen.

May St. Joseph guard and protect our families as he did the Holy Family.

St. Joseph, Intercede for us!

Remembering you in our daily prayers!

God Bless and keep you in His loving embrace,
Sister Mary and Sisters

++ EASTER SUNDAY ++REFLECTION FOR April 4, 2021 EASTER SUNDAY

April 4, 2021

JESUS CHRIST is RISEN from the Dead ! ALLELUIA ! ALLELUIA ! ALLELUIA !

Our proclaiming Christ Resurrected is our connection with the most profound, ongoing mystery of our faith. JESUS LIVES ! ! !To proclaim that truth with our lips is relatively easy.To proclaim and give witness to that truth with our lives is a struggle and a challenge. Are we up to the struggle and the challenge to be human witnesses of theLiving Christ?

Jesus, the Son of God, accepted taking on our humanity. Through His humanity, He revealed to us the ” Face of God”. He witnessed for us the way to live as graced human beings. Through the precious gift of our baptism, we are dipped into the very life of Christ. (The word Baptism comes from the Greek word – “to be dipped into”)Being plunged into the Living Waters of Baptism, and rising up from its waters connects us with, and indeed makes us one with the Living Christ! We are in fact life long recipients of all the grace we need to live, love, and yes suffer, die, AND be raised up to new life with Jesus!

Yes, the Easter Message – JESUS LIVES – becomes a reality through us !Yes, the Easter Message – JESUS LIVES – continues now , and for all time, even beyond time Into eternity for us !Remaining in the waters of Baptism, the Living Waters of Christ, will lift us up andstrengthen our will to stay with Jesus. The decision is ours.Do we say “Yes” to the challenge?

Do we accept the companionship of Jesus?

Do we believe, and find strength in the promise of life to the fullest?

With faith and hope in God’s love, mercy and forgiveness, we can say “Yes” to all of the above . And with joy, love and peace, we can proclaim:Yes, Jesus Christ is Risen from the Dead!

Yes, Jesus Christ lives!

Yes, Jesus Christ has lifted up our humanity and has called us to be His sisters and brothers, has given us the joy of being daughters and sons of God the Father, and has formed us into a community of love in the Holy Spirit.

And to this, most powerful, ongoing mystery of our faith, let us proclaim -Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia ! ! !

Have a blessed and joyous Easter. Sister Gerrie Contento, MPF
